Like I said elsewhere, it needn’t to be realistic but there has to be limitations and consequences to whatever characters do with their powers. I’m actually thinking of stuff like Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures where if somebody injures the familiar (Stand), they also injure the user behind it. Another one has a ‘Stand’ that fixes things but goes awry if he’s irritated.
Plus there are characters that work well within their given limitations like Dio Brando who simply stops time but that’s used to great effect.It may not always be the case but it makes sense that characters are actually effected in these attacks and some of them may not always win and risk losing their lives anyways.
Since most of them don’t return for good in the reboot (starting with Steel Ball Run to my knowledge), it makes it more believable this way.
