Hideaki Anno said that Japanese anime will disappear in 5 to 20 years, which is in my lifetime and given that the Japanese anime industry also seems to have a shortage of domestic animators it could come even sooner. A great question is whether if any other country can fill in the spot for Japan.
Perhaps like what the extinction of dinosaurs is to mammalian diversity, anime’s demise will enable other Asian and even African animation industries to flourish. One could see Ghanaian animation to rise tremendously enough to give us ‘Ananse’ just as South Africa could claim ‘Supa Strikas’ and Nigeria’s ‘Bino and Fino’.
China itself would end up not only effectively replacing Japan in anime but also outsourcing its animation to places like the Philippines and Cameroon if that ever happens at all. But it could occur following anime’s demise.
