Not as good as the real thing

The problem with plagiarism has led me to something interesting. When it comes to ripoffs of popular franchises like God of War, they’re not necessarily plagiarised but still suffer from being a clone of the real thing. They could be better than it but will never be it.

I don’t play video games but one could get how others felt about such games like Dante’s Inferno which is often pegged as a GOW ripoff. (There’s also another video game based on Divine Comedy called Devil May Cry but it seems to be its own thing and the protagonist resembles the actual poet more by consistently wearing red clothing.)

A big plagiarism scandal would still validate that sentiment where no matter how good the ripoff is, it’ll never be the real thing.
